Maigne's Syndrome
Contact UsWhat Is It Maigne Syndrome?
Maigne syndrome, also known as thoracolumbar junction syndrome, is a condition that causes pain in the lower back, hip, groin, and buttocks. It is caused by irritation or compression of the nerves that originate in the thoracolumbar region of the spine, which is the area where the lower thoracic spine meets the upper lumbar spine.
The condition can be caused by a variety of factors, including spinal degeneration, trauma, or repetitive strain. Symptoms may include pain that is sharp or burning, and may be accompanied by tingling, numbness, or weakness in the affected area.
What Causes Maigne Syndrome?
- Spinal degeneration: This is a common cause of Maigne syndrome, especially in older adults. Degeneration of the spinal discs or joints in the thoracolumbar region can cause irritation or compression of the nerves, leading to pain and other symptoms.
- Trauma: Injury to the thoracolumbar region, such as from a fall, car accident, or sports injury, can cause Maigne syndrome. The trauma can damage the nerves or lead to inflammation that irritates the nerves.
- Repetitive strain: Repeated movements that strain the thoracolumbar region can also cause Maigne syndrome. This can include activities such as heavy lifting, bending, or twisting, which can put pressure on the nerves in the area.
- Structural abnormalities: Structural abnormalities in the thoracolumbar region, such as a herniated disc, spinal stenosis, or scoliosis, can also cause Maigne syndrome by putting pressure on the nerves.
