What is Ankle Sprain?

An ankle sprain is a common injury that occurs when the ligaments that connect the bones of the ankle joint are stretched or torn. The ankle joint is made up of three bones: the tibia (shinbone), the fibula (the smaller bone in the lower leg), and the talus (the bone that sits on top of the heel bone). Ligaments are tough, fibrous bands of tissue that connect bones to other bones and help stabilize the joint.

An ankle sprain typically happens when the foot rolls or twists in an awkward way, causing the ligaments on the outside of the ankle to stretch or tear. This can cause pain, swelling, and difficulty walking. Ankle sprains are graded based on the severity of the injury, with grade 1 being a mild sprain, grade 2 being a moderate sprain, and grade 3 being a severe sprain that involves a complete tear of the ligament.

Types of Ankle Sprains

Ankle sprains can be classified into different types, based on where the injury occurs and how severe it is.

The most common type is called a lateral ankle sprain, which happens when the foot turns inwards and the ankle rolls outwards, causing the ligaments on the outside of the ankle to get stretched or torn. This type of sprain can be mild, moderate, or severe, depending on how bad the injury is.

Another type of ankle sprain is called a medial ankle sprain, which is less common but can be more serious. This happens when the foot turns outwards and the ankle rolls inwards, causing the ligaments on the inside of the ankle to stretch or tear.

There are also high ankle sprains, which happen when the ligaments above the ankle joint get damaged. These types of sprains can be more severe and may take longer to heal. Within the high ankle sprain category, there are also syndesmotic ankle sprains, which involve a group of ligaments that hold the tibia and fibula together at the ankle joint. These types of sprains are less common but can be more serious and may require more extensive treatment.

So, these are the different types of ankle sprains that a person can experience, depending on the location and severity of the injury.

How we take care of Ankle Sprains

The care of an ankle sprain depends on the severity of the injury, but in general, the following steps can be taken:

  1. Rest: Avoid putting weight on the injured ankle and rest it as much as possible.
  2. Ice: Apply ice to the ankle for 15-20 minutes at a time, several times a day, to help reduce swelling and pain. Use a cloth or towel to wrap the ice pack and avoid placing it directly on the skin.
  3. Compression: Wrap the ankle with an elastic bandage to help reduce swelling and provide support. Make sure the bandage is snug but not too tight, as this can cut off circulation.
  4. Elevation: Elevate the ankle above the level of the heart as much as possible to reduce swelling.
  5. Pain relief: Over-the-counter pain medications such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen can be taken to help relieve pain and inflammation.
  6. Rehabilitation exercises: After a few days of rest, gentle exercises can help improve flexibility and strength in the ankle. Physical therapy may also be recommended for severe sprains.

It’s important to seek medical attention if the pain is severe, if there is significant swelling or bruising, if the ankle feels unstable, or if there is difficulty walking. A healthcare professional can assess the injury and determine if further treatment or imaging is necessary, such as an X-ray or MRI. In some cases, surgery may be required to repair a severe sprain.
