What Is Tennis Elbow?

Tennis elbow, also known as lateral epicondylitis, is a condition that causes pain and tenderness in the outer part of the elbow. It occurs when the tendons that attach to the lateral epicondyle (a bony bump on the outer part of the elbow) become inflamed or damaged.
Despite its name, tennis elbow is not only caused by playing tennis. It can occur in anyone who repeatedly uses their forearm muscles, such as painters, plumbers, and carpenters. Common symptoms of tennis elbow include pain and tenderness on the outer part of the elbow, weakened grip strength, and difficulty lifting objects.

What Causes Tennis Elbow?

Tennis elbow is caused by repetitive stress or overuse of the forearm muscles and tendons that attach to the lateral epicondyle (a bony bump on the outer part of the elbow). This repetitive stress can cause tiny tears in the tendons, leading to inflammation and pain.
Some of the common activities that can lead to tennis elbow include playing tennis (especially if the backhand stroke is used frequently), painting, using a screwdriver or hammer, typing, and using a mouse. Any activity that involves repetitive wrist and arm movements can put you at risk of developing tennis elbow.
Risk factors for tennis elbow include age (most commonly affects people between 30 and 50 years old), sex (it is more common in men than women), certain occupations, and having a history of previous elbow injury or arthritis.
